ONCOLOGY MASSAGE
In March 2025 I qualified as a Massage Therapist in Oncology Massage. It is very important that anyone with a recent, or had in the past a cancer diagnosis that should they want or need soft tissue therapy they see an accredited therapist. I wanted to become a qualified therapist in oncology so that I understand how I can help with such a diagnosis of cancer and aim to help people to lead a better quality of life and improve their wellbeing as well as support for immediate family members and friends. This skillset now allows me to confidently offer massage in Soft Tissue Therapy as a service.
FACT – Massage in a cancer diagnosis is safe. It can be contraindicated in certain conditions, but this does not mean massage cannot be performed.
MYTH – Massage is dangerous as it ‘pushes’ cancer cells around the body. This is a myth because cancer cannot be accelerated or pushed around the system. There is no scientific evidence to support that massage in cancer is dangerous.
Below are the main benefits of massage in a cancer diagnosis:
- Pain Management
- Reduce Anxiety and Fatigue
- Improve Sleep Quality
- Improve circulation
- Potential for Improved Mood and Quality of life
“I always state that oncology massage is not a cure for cancer but an avenue to improve your wellbeing and health.”
So.. what do I practice with my oncology skillset
I am Safe. I am Effective.
I have developed my understanding of common conditions and how I need to manage the complexity and support your journey needs.
I have had to modify my existing techniques along with some new ones specific to some of these conditions. I work in conjunction with your oncology team and with your friends and family so the journey is a process that is joined up. I recognise the fears and trauma a cancer diagnosis is, and my aim is to help as much as I can your wellbeing.
I Support your Needs.
A cancer diagnosis can be extremely traumatic, and I recognise how suddenly your faced with their own mortality, and an uncertain future.
Whether I am helping a client who has had a previous diagnosis years in the past, or those who are currently receiving treatment, my clinic time with you will enable you to have an oncology massage with confidence and trust that your wellbeing is my top priority.
I work with Ease and Confidence
My overall qualification in Soft Tissue Therapy means I have a high level of knowledge in anatomy and physiology that leads me to work on muscular and soft tissue that will benefit from my touch. Touch is very important and enhances the overall experience for you. What is touch… touch is not about making the tissue (muscle and connective) give in through deep tissue massage. In fact, I do not use deep tissue with the plan as I use a technique that allows me to melt into the fibres and allow the relaxation and subtleness to come to me. A technique that is not practised outside general sports massage. I always wait for that to happen and not look for it. I deliver only the needs the tissue will let me!
What does a session look like with me?
1 – please contact me and have a 15 min conversation by phone and face to face contact so I understand what you are looking for. This is Free of Charge consultation.
2 – I will ‘reach out’ to your oncology teams and introduce myself and make sure we all are aware what you have asked for and understand any contraindication there are for example tumour sites, IV points, radiotherapy sites, chemotherapy neuropathies etc.
3 – Booking in and seeing me – this is not a fixed time (although I do allow an hour), but sometimes with light massage you can tire easily. I will not keep massaging if your body system will not allow it. Massage can fatigue, but we must always remember the outcome we all would like, which is an improvement in your health and wellbeing.
